Here is an close up view of the CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) sensor inside one of my old Nikons.

Light hits the photoactive region and produces signals that are processed by the camera into an image.

For years, CCD technology has been the mainstay of digital cameras but are gradually being replaced by CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensors.
